Lena (Fonzi/Franzi) Czarny, age 104 of West Hartford departed from this life on September 10, 2017. She was the widow of the late John A. Czarny to whom she was married for 57 years. She was born in Bolognano, Italy on August 26, 1913 and was named Isolina the daughter of the late Oraziantonio (Antonio) and Teresa (Tedesco) Fonzi. She arrived in the United States at the age of 2 yrs. old on August 13, 1916 in the company of her mother and three sisters Gemma, Adelina and Maria aboard the Duca d'Aosta. Upon the...

Lena (Fonzi/Franzi) Czarny, age 104 of West Hartford departed from this life on September 10, 2017. She was the widow of the late John A. Czarny to whom she was married for 57 years. She was born in Bolognano, Italy on August 26, 1913 and was named Isolina the daughter of the late Oraziantonio (Antonio) and Teresa (Tedesco) Fonzi. She arrived in the United States at the age of 2 yrs. old on August 13, 1916 in the company of her mother and three sisters Gemma, Adelina and Maria aboard the Duca d'Aosta. Upon the naturalization of her father on June 22, 1923 in New Britain, she became a United States citizen as a minor child of a naturalized parent. She was raised in New Britain and was married at St. Ann Church on June 28, 1941. She worked for many years at the Lifshutz store in New Britain. Lena and her husband brought up their family in West Hartford and owned and operated Robert's 5 and 10 Store with her husband located in Hartford from 1949 to 1988. She was a loving and devoted mother to Robert of Reno, NV and Michael who is married to Ronie Jacobsen of Presque Isle, WI. She also survived by her grandson Benjamin, several nieces and nephews. Lena was also predeceased by her sisters Gemma Rio, Adeline D'Angelo and Maria DePasquale.

A Funeral Home service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 11:00am at New Britain Memorial Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in New Britain. Visitation will be held Thursday September 14, 2017 from 10am to 11am prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers gifts may be sent in her name to Middlewoods of Farmington (EHF), 509 Middle Rd., Farmington, CT 06032. Hartford.
